When the planer milling machine is milling, the milling width should be approximately equal to 2/3 of the diameter of the milling cutter, which can ensure that the blade can immediately cut into the workpiece at the open end, with almost no conflict. If less than 1/2 of the diameter of the milling cutter, the blade and the beginning of "conflict" workpiece, due to the cutting thickness becomes smaller, the feed per tooth will also be reduced due to the narrowing of the radial cutting width. The result of "conflict" shortens the tool life. For carbide tools, it is more advantageous to add feed per tooth and reduce the depth of cut.
Therefore, when rough milling, if the radial cutting width is less than the radius of the milling cutter, adding the amount of feed, the tool life will be improved, and the processing time of the gantry milling machine will be shortened. Of course, fine milling requires a smooth surface of the workpiece, so the amount of cutting should be limited.
Try to adjust the radial milling width and confirm the ratio of milling cutter diameter to radial milling width, which is carried out on a high-precision gantry machining center, so as to observe the change of surface roughness of the workpiece while adjusting the ratio.
